The Neutral Makeup Look That Works With Any Outfit Day And Night
If there is a single makeup look you need to know, then this is the one. And let me tell you why.
The beauty of a neutral look is that it is neutral — there are no bright colours or strong tones — and very wearable. You can wear it with any outfit, day or night.
Neutral looks are created using neutral (not cool or warm) shades of brown, taupe, and grey. But for simplicity’s sake in my look I stick to shades of brown and it works just fine.
Here are the products I used but you can use any eyeshadow palette and other products with similar tones — you just need to know what a neutral eyeshadow looks like. So the colour selection and technique is what I really want you to focus on.
There are a few different ways to create and customise a neutral makeup look depending on your preferences (I talk about each in detail in the video tutorial below) but here’s a quick recap:
Keep it matte and simple:
Apply a lighter neutral matte brown in your crease (you can use your bronzer for this if it’s a neutral tone). Then apply a slightly deeper brown on the lid area with a flat brush and blend it out into your crease. Apply both shades to your lower lash line using a smudge brush (watch this video to exactly how).
Add a little sparkle for fun:
Follow the steps above and then choose your favourite shimmer — with this shades of dull gold, bronze, copper, rose gold and taupe gold work great — and use your finger to gently tap it on your eyelid working from the inner corner of your eye towards the centre or apply all over if you prefer.
If you want to keep the look matte, then skip this step and move on.
Make it smoky:
Follow the steps above and then take a third dark brown shade on a tapered brush and gently tap it into the outer corner of your eyes (watch the video tutorial to see the exact placement for this step). Be sure to also blend the dark brown inwards into the shimmer shade on your lid, so that it looks seamless.
Finish with winged liner and/or mascara and lipstick of your choice:
Once you’re happy with how the eyeshadow looks, then you can add a winged liner using liquid eyeliner or use brown/black eyeshadow with an angled brush (my go-to technique). Or skip the liner and add lots of mascara and call it a day.
Neutral eye makeup looks great with a range of lipstick shades such as dusty rose, nude pink, nude peach, neutral brown or deep brown.
