Review of the Vegetarian Version of the Tasting Menu Experience at Sühring Bangkok

As a vegetarian I am happy to see that an increasing number of restaurants and dining establishments are rising up to the challenge of creating vegetarian dining experiences that are on par with the ones designed for non-vegetarians.

After my third visit to two-michelin star Sühring — a charming fine dining restaurant in Bangkok offering a unique take on German gastronomy — I decided it was time to share my thoughts on the blog.

Offering a warm and homely vibe, Sühring is located in a large and expansive Thai villa dating back to the 1970s. The interiors have been renovated to reflect a minimalistic and elegant aesthetic while the exteriors are accented with lush landscaped greenery. The food and dining experience is what takes centre stage here.

When I made my reservation online I put in the dietary requirements of my group (3 vegetarians, 1 person did not eat beef and 1 person did not eat pork) and that was it. The restaurant adjusted the Erlebnis tasting menu according to each person’s needs without any fuss, confusion or mistakes.

For a few different reasons the vegetarian version of the Erlebnis tasting menu at Sühring is honestly one of my favourite dining experiences (clearly seeing that it was my third time going back in a year!). First, I’m not familiar with German cuisine at all but I think the way each course is interpreted and presented gave me a better understanding of the foundations of German foods. Second, most of the courses are bursting with flavour and there’s a lovely delight for the taste buds incorporated into each course. And third, the presentation of each course is a treat for the eyes.

The inspiration behind the Erlebnis menu is derived from the chefs’ (Thomas and Mathias Sühring) childhood memories and family recipes and also based on the philosophy of quality, seasonality and simplicity. And I could feel this in the concept and design of each course: there is something familiar and comforting but with a subtle twist.

In my opinion, a tasting menu can be a very subjective experience. There is an inherent joy in not knowing everything about each dish and being pleasantly surprised with each course and all that it has to offer your taste buds. So in the spirit of not ruining a good surprise, I am sharing a few photos of my vegetarian Sühring Erlebnis tasting menu and not giving an in-depth review of each course.

Ranked no.4 on Asia’s Best Restaurants for 2019, Sühring offers an exquisite and memorable dining experience. I highly recommend it for either an intimate special occasion or large group celebration.

Sühring is open for lunch (menu option only) and also offers a la carte for dinner service Monday to Thursday only. Please visit Sühring’s website for full details.
