My Morning Routine Checklist To Start The Day Right
Here’s what my morning routine checklist looks like. It’s not that complicated, but I make sure to stick to it every single day and it works! Another important thing I want to point out is that I don’t like to rush my morning routine, so I take my time and enjoy each part of it.

My Morning Routine Checklist
Avoid looking at phone or any device for the first 45 minutes of the day
This one is tough, I know, but I cannot tell you how nice and peaceful it is to not be staring at a phone or screen the moment I open my eyes. If I look at my messages and notifications first thing in the morning, then I get anxious about replying and it throws off my “morning routine chill” as I like to call it. So, I avoid looking at my phone for at least 45 minutes and this allows me to set a relaxed and positive tone for the day. Of course, there are days and situations that don’t allow for this, and it’s fine. I just like to keep a mental reminder to be device-free when I wake up.
Sip on hot water on an empty stomach
Drinking hot water with lemon, honey and cinnamon is the very first thing I do after I wake up because it helps to jump start the body’s metabolism and helps with fat burning. Hot water on an empty stomach also helps bowel movements, aids digestion, and cleanses the intestines. In a nutshell: hot water helps things move along. There are lots of different ways to drink hot water in the mornings:
- Plain hot water
- Hot water with lemon
- Hot water with turmeric, honey and lemon
- Hot water with lemon and ginger
- Hot water with chia seeds, lemon and apple cider vinegar.
Research the benefits and choose what works for you. I like to sip on my hot water for 5-10 minutes. I find it calming and helps to wake me up.
Eat a nutritious and filling breakfast at a leisurely pace
My breakfast is the same every day (except for pancake day!): 2 egg white omelet with diced tomatoes and onions (a little salt and pepper for seasoning) and 1 slice of wholewheat toast. Some days I’ll switch out the omelet with a boiled egg and avocado. But most mornings I eat the same breakfast because it’s filling, nutritious, and tasty. The important thing with breakfast is I don’t eat in a hurry — I hate feeling rushed. I take my time with each bite and truly enjoy the meal. I think it’s important to focus on what I am eating and appreciate it. Added side benefit: eating slowly helps my brain believe I am full for longer.
Read the news, catch up on messages, and look at plan for the day
Some days I will eat my leisurely breakfast while I catch up on news and messages. By this point at least 30-45 minutes have passed since I woke up, so devices are allowed. I like reading the news first thing to just be aware of what’s happening in the world. Of course, messages and social media follow right after. There’s no hiding or denying it.
Make a hot cup of coffee and sip on it slowly
Making my morning cup of coffee is a sacred part of my morning routine checklist. It’s one of my favorite parts of the morning because the smell of freshly brewed hot coffee awakens my soul. I like to have it about 30 minutes after I’m done eating breakfast. I’m not really a morning person, but right after that first sip of coffee, I’m ready to take on the day. I cherish my coffee and sip on it very slowly.
Take a shower and do morning skincare routine
Sometimes halfway through sipping my morning coffee, since it’s so hot, I’ll take a quick shower and do my morning skincare routine (face wash, vitamin C serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, lip balm). If I have nowhere to go, then I don’t wear makeup. But, without fail, I always do my full skincare routine because it helps me feel put together and ready for the day.
