How To Use A BHA Exfoliant

Here’s everything you need to know about BHA exfoliant and how to use it in your skincare routine — I share my favorite one too!

What is a BHA?

The full form of BHA is beta hydroxy acid — a natural acid molecule found in willow bark, fruits, birch and wintergreen leaves. This type of acid molecule is an “oil-loving” acid, which mean it attracts oil, so it used in skincare products to remove excess sebum and impurities from pores. The most popular BHA is salicylic acid.

Different forms of BHA

BHA (salicylic acid) is available in many different forms — you will see it as a key ingredient in face cleansers, exfoliating toners, and serums.

How often to use BHA exfoliant

The most popular and effective way to use a BHA in your skincare routine is to use it as an exfoliating toner. Use it 2-3 times a week at night after cleansing and follow up with a hydrating serum and moisturizer. Avoid using BHA exfoliating toner in the day time as it is a powerful ingredient and makes your skin more sensitive to the sun — you risk developing reactions or sensitivities.

Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Before & After

My favorite exfoliating toner is the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. It feels more like a serum and absorbs well into the skin. Especially if you’re new to BHA, then this is a good one to start off with. With all new skincare, the rule is to start slow and build up. I started off with once a week (about two splashes the size of a quarter) and now use the Paula Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant three nights a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays). It has done wonders to reduce my acne breakouts and keep skin feeling smooth and clean. The photos below were taken 3 weeks apart.

BHA and Vitamin C

You can use BHA and Vitamin C in your skincare routine, just don’t use them together at the same time. Use Vitamin C in the mornings and BHA at night (2-3x a week).

BHA and Retinol

Similar to Vitamin C, be mindful where in your skincare you are using BHA and retinol. Do not use them together in the same skincare routine. Read this post for more info: How To Use Salicylic Acid And Retinol In Your Skincare Routine

BHA and Niacinamide

You can use BHA and niacinamide together in, but the only caveat is after applying an acid like salicylic acid you have to wait 30 minutes before going in with niacinamide for maximum effectiveness (otherwise they just cancel each other out). Instead, save time and use BHA and niacinamide on different nights.
