I never reached for brown shades because I thought they didn’t flatter me. But, recently (maybe it’s age?), I find brown on the lips to look very elegant and understated. Not to mention the tinted brown lips of the 90s is making a comeback. It’s a very neutral look; goes with pretty much any kind of outfit; and works day or night. For those with medium or deeper skin tones, brown lipsticks can also be used as nude lipsticks too.

Affordable Brown Lipsticks

L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Lipstick – 202 Peony Sauvignon

This might be my favorite brown lipstick from the whole collection. It’s a rich and warm brown, which suits medium skin tones with yellow undertones. I really like the way it brightens the complexion and makes the lips look extra plump. L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Matte Lipstick – 202 Peony Sauvignon is a very wearable shade — day or night — and the formula is extremely moisturizing and long-lasting.

My preferred way to wear a richer brown lipstick like this is to pair it with a heavier eye look such as a smoky eye or cat eye winged liner. The brown lip is quite neutral, so pairing it with a slightly more dramatic eye adds the perfect amount of glam.

Medium Range Brown Lipsticks

Live Tinted Huestick – True

Described as a ‘dusty rose’ on the Live Tinted website, but on wearing this lipstick I think it looks more like a dusty light brown on my skin tone. It has pink undertones, which always helps to compliment and brighten medium skin tones. The Live Tinted Huestick in True is a multistick, so you can use it on the eyes, cheeks and lips. The formula is creamy and very comfortable.

I think it’s a great everyday shade because it is a lighter brown. For a quick and easy daytime look, this is how I would style it: a glowy even complexion, use the huestick as blush and wear some mascara.

I also like mixing True with deeper brown lipsticks, if I find them too dark.

High-End Range Brown Lipsticks

MAC Cosmetics Satin Lipstick – Mocha

Mocha from MAC is a rich brown with peachy/brick undertones. Peach really flatters medium skin tones with yellow undertones and gives a bright, youthful glow; it’s what I love about this particular brown lipstick. The satin formula is another favorite because the lipstick feels very comfortable and nourishing on the lips. The color is long-lasting too.

I wear Mocha in many different ways: as a neutral lipstick and no other makeup or paired with a glam eye look. The beauty of a peachy brown is you can pretty much wear it any way you like.
