Modern And Elegant Makeup Looks For The Diwali and Festive Season

It’s officially that festive time of year!

Indian outfits by nature are colourful and vibrant and finding makeup looks to suit them might not be as easy as you think. I think it’s easy to go down the “matchy matchy” route i.e. matching the colour of the makeup to the outfit. Furthermore, Diwali comes with a range of celebrations from intimate family functions where simple and soft looks are enough to grand Diwali parties where the glam and glow are centre stage (I know in the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic our celebrations might look a little different but that doesn’t stop us from bringing out makeup A-game!).

So keeping a few of these thoughts in mind, I came up with four different looks for Diwali, ranging from soft and neutral to dramatic and glam. While I did keep my outfits in mind, I really wanted to create more universally flattering modern and elegant makeup looks that could work with any outfit. I also believe these looks can be worn to all kinds of events and functions — not only Diwali — so I hope you find them as a source of inspiration for other festivals and celebrations.

Look 1: Soft Pink Makeup Look

This look is quick and easy to do and ideal for simple functions and events. It’s neutral enough to suit most outfits and looks great on medium skin tones.

My main trick to make this look quick and effective is to keep it monochromatic i.e using one single tone/colour): I used my blush as eyeshadow and similar tone lipstick to keep the look cohesive. And I used a brown liner instead of black to keep the look softer and more natural. The rest of the look — lipstick, blush, bronzer, highlighter and mascara — can be adapted to your preferences. Look 2: Single Purple Eyeshadow Look With A Pop of Glitter

This is another great quick and easy look that looks like you put in a lot of effort but really it takes less than 10 minutes to do.

First I applied purple cream eyeliner all over my lid and smudged it out to my crease area and then I went over it with a similar-toned purple eyeshadow to set the cream eyeliner in place. I added some glitter sparkle to the inner third of my eye and then lined my lids and lower lash line with a dark brown eyeliner and smudge it out to add a little more dimension. I paired it with a pastel pink lip so my eyes would be the focus of the look but you can choose any colour you prefer.

Look 3: Brown Smoky Eye With Coral Lips

When things need to get glam that’s when the liquid eyeliner shows up on my face!

I love a warm brown smoky eye — it’s soft and glam at the same time and can be worn with literally everything. In this look I stuck to different shades of brown to add depth to the smoky look and then added a thick line of black eyeliner to make my eyes look bigger and more dramatic. I also added dark brown shadow to smoke out the lower lash line. To help enhance the eyes and up the drama of the look, I used a red/coral-toned lipstick and contoured my face and nose a bit more with bronzer and added very little blush so that the eyes and lips would remain the focus since they were so bright.

Look 4: Purple Smoky Eye With Mauve Lips

I might be a little partial to purple. But it looks so amazing with brown eyes and on medium toned skin so here’s another extra glam look.

It’s a purple smoky eye with more of a winged-out, cat-eye like shape to the shadow. I like doing this because it makes the eyes look more dramatic as well as lifts them up. To achieve this look check out my tutorial on my IGTV. This look does take a little more time and effort with with building up and blending out the different tones of purple but once it’s done — it looks incredible (IMHO!). I also added some black liquid eyeliner to my upper lids and added black kohl to my lower lash line to further define my eyes. I added a highlight to my inner corner to make my eyes look brighter and more open. I opted for a mauve-toned lipstick to complement the eyes and kept the rest of my face pretty simple and understated.
