Review of Bangkok’s New Vegan Restaurant on Sukhumvit Road: Vistro
I’m a visual person. I’m drawn to places and things by the way they look either online or in-person. Bangkok’s new vegan restaurant Vistro is a feast for the eyes (and for the tummy!). Located on Sukhumvit Soi 24 in the heart of Bangkok’s bustling expat centre, I passed Vistro multiple times and couldn’t help but notice the restaurant’s green, earthy minimalist vibe that begins right at the front door. Something about it made me curious to try the place.
Vistro’s interiors are warm and welcoming. There’s a unique mix of textured wooden surfaces and dark grey furniture contrasted with a large window with sunlight streaming in and green plants everywhere. I think the restaurant is incredibly tastefully and purposefully designed. The first floor has the Grab ‘n’ Go counter for packaged healthy snacks, paleo friendly & gluten-free baked goods, cold-pressed juices, cold brew coffee, and more. The second floor is where the restaurant is located.
Being a plant-based vegan restaurant and cafe, everything on Vistro’s menu is made from plants — no animal products including milk, butter, cheese etc are used in any of the food and drink. The menu is large and has an interesting mix of Thai and Asian-inspired dishes and Western favourites such as burgers, sandwiches, wraps and pasta.
I have to say I was very, very impressed with most of the Asian/Thai-inspired dishes at Vistro. Considering each of the dishes above is traditionally made with meat, the chefs at Vistro have figured out a creative and effective way to use alternative vegan ingredients and make each dish very flavourful, tasty and filling. I do recommend all the dishes in the photos but my favourites are the Miang Khaam Salad (a lettuce wrap in concept) and the Vistro Dumplings — both are simply delicious. Be sure to also try some of the cold-pressed juices and desserts — the chocolate cake is completely vegan and scrumptious.
In my excitement to try more dishes on the menu, I ordered in from Vistro a few times as well and tried the dishes in the photos above. I enjoyed the Vistro Poke bowl a lot; it has a nice crunch and tangy flavour. However, the Beet Ravioli, Sushiritto and Strawberry Fields salad did not impress me as much — I found each dish to be on the bland side.
Overall, I highly recommend Vistro. The dishes overall are delicious and interesting in concept and I don’t think that’s necessarily easy to do using only plant-based and vegan ingredients. So I have to give a shout out to the thought, creativity and care put into the details of each dish. I think there’s something for everyone at Vistro and if you’re vegetarian or vegan, then this is a must-visit restaurant in Bangkok.
